How to get from Salerno to Amalfi

Salerno is an undiscovered pearl right around the corner of the famous Amalfi Coast. A vived harbour city where you truly can experience the authentic South Italian lifestyle. Besides all the small restaurants, authentic bars and lovely boutiques, it’s a strategic position for those who are planning on visiting the Amalfi Coast. In this blog we explain you how to get from Salerno to Amalfi by ferry, bus, car, scooter and taxi.

Traveling by ferry

From March until the end of October there is a ferry connection available between Salerno and Amalfi. The boarding location is located at Piazza della Concordia (click on the link to go to Google Maps) and it takes between 35 and 70 minutes (depending the amount of stops). This ferry line is called Travelmar.

If you are staying at Casa Santangelo or any other location closer to Stazione Marittima and planning on leaving early in the morning, you could take this ferry as well:

From Stazione Marittima there is another company called Alicost daily leaving at 08:40 am, so make sure you are waiting in the correct line.

For both lines there is no need to buy your tickets in advance. Just make sure you are in time at the boarding location so you can buy your ticket(s) at the service desk.  To be honest, this is one of our favorite ways of traveling to Amalfi, especially on a sunny day as the views are absolutely stunning and you can sit back, relax and enjoy the sun from the top deck.

Traveling by bus
Another way to travel from Salerno to Amalfi is by public transportation. You can get a Costierasita ticket at almost every tabacchi for €10,- and it allows you to travel unlimited for 24 hours from the moment you validate it.

You can travel between the following places:

To avoid any fees, it’s very important to validate your Costierasita card prior to your first departure. You can either do this at the Sita machine or you just write your name, date of birth and check-in time manually on your card.

Where to take the bus?
As it’s not always quite sure where the busses stop – welcome to South Italy ? – the safest way to catch the bus in Salerno is right at the starting point: Via Leonino Vinciprova . From Casa Santangelo it’s a two kilometer walk and you will find it behind the train station and Grand Hotel Salerno. However, there is another stop right in front of Teatro Verdi.

Timetable
See here the timetable for both the departure to Amalfi as well as the return to Salerno. Keep an eye on the F, G and H to make sure you are waiting for the right time slot. It’s easy to find your way back from Amalfi to Salerno as there is only one big parking lot where all busses arrive and depart, so you can’t go wrong.

Traveling by car or scooter
Now if we are talking about the famous SS163 route, going by car or scooter is the way to go. It allows you to make stops in between to catch the breathtaking views from the pittoresk villages along the coast. Along the way you will find some very characteristic places where lemons and fruit are being sold. Especially during the high season be prepared for quite a lot of traffic. To skip the traffic, you could rent a scooter and travel like the locals do!

For car rentals we have a very good experience with B Rent Salerno and Maggiore. Both of them you find right in front of Salerno Station.

For scooter rentals we suggest Salerno Noleggiami, which you can also find in front of Salerno Station. For guests of Casa Santangelo it’s our pleasure to assist you in making a reservation, just let us know how we can help you.

Once you cross the viaduct, keep going straight ahead, pass Vietri sul mare on your left hand until you see the traffic sign as shown in the photo. Keep left and from there… follow the famous SS163 until Amalfi!
